Byway Mobile App Development
Has anyone put out a Request for Proposal to a selection of mobile device app developers? I would be interested in seeing one. I understand BarZ Adventures did the Creole Nature Trail app and would also be interested in speaking to someone that was involved in that project to discuss lessons learned. We are looking to develop a Byway Tour mobile application and are looking to benchmark approaches.

Thanks for any feedback you might have.

Re: Byway Mobile App Development
Perhaps the Resource Center could set up a conference call about Creole Nature Trail app experience. I think it would be of interest to many of us.

Re: Byway Mobile App Development
If a conference call is set up regarding development of mobile app's, it would be most helpful if there were someone involved in that call who could share at least ballpark cost information and could outline the most likely pitfalls to watch for when working on mobile app development. I know one concern is format size which is why it's generally not advised to simply make an existing website into a mobile application. Resource Center folks-Would it be possible to include someone with that kind of experience?

National Scenic Byways-Standard within Mobile Navigation
This may be another discussion that I have not been a part of but I'm going to ask this anyway....

Is the NSB Program working with Google Maps, Mapquest, or any of the leading mobile navigation companies such as Garmin to include all Nationally designated byways as standard mapping information for all users? This is the common question asked by anyone and everyone when I discuss byways. Thanks!

Re: Byway Mobile App Development
I certainly agree that a webinar regarding the Mobile App Development, pros, cons, costs, and challenges would be very beneficial.

We concur that having some type of formal discussion or group conference/webinar on this topic is a great idea. We'll review all the comments, and provide an announcement to everyone in the very near future.

Re: Byway Mobile App Development
Friends of the Beartooth All-American Road is VERY interested in this type of app and will be on/at any training provided by NSB. Anything going on at National Conference regarding this type of product? Could it be demo-ed at the Conference so we could do some hands on experimenting to see how it actually looks/works?

Re: Byway Mobile App Development
The Turquoise Trail National Scenic Byway would be interested in a nuts and bolts discussion regarding mobile apps as well...We live in an area where cell coverage can be minimal. This topic has certainly generated alot of interest.

Yes, Terry, great idea! I found Byways not shown on the GPS in a rental car, and not shown on the GPS on my new iPhone.

Re: Byway Mobile App Development
I agree that the answer is to get the byways on Google and Mapquest maps so someone can use their Garmin, or any other GPS unit to find their way along our byways . I would like to be part of the webnar. Joe Tempel, Lariat Loop National Scenic Byway. joe

Re: Byway Mobile App Development
I wholeheartedly agree that scenic byways, both state and nationally designated (i.e. those on byways.org) should be displayed on GPS. Consistency with specifications and quality control is key to getting this done, so it should be provided to GPS vendors through a single source, by or through the FHWA, Byways Resource Center or by contract with Arrowhead Regional Council or others. However, it is not likely that all the information contributing to traveler's experience will be there, so mobile apps for individual byways are still needed and training for this (even to just frame specs) is important. I would be happy to provide input to this.

Re: Byway Mobile App Development
Thanks to all of the people that attended our networking call today on the topic of designing and implementing mobile technology for byways.

I think we had a good discussion and thanks to Sallie, Cris, Anne, and Gary for sharing their information and fielding questions from the community.

I have attached the RFP from Anne that was discussed during the call. Thanks, Anne, for providing this.
