Review and Submit Nomination Applications for National Designation to the FHWA division office.
Establish procedures and deadlines for submitting nomination applications to the State, Indian tribe, or Federal land management agency.
Read and familiarize yourself with the Interim Policy (May 18, 1995), the principal policy for the National Scenic Byways Program.
Acquaint yourself with the provisions of 23 U.S.C. 162
Manage the expectations of byway leaders and potential applicants within your State, Indian tribe or Federal land management agency. Work with applicants to ensure that only nominations that meet the specifications for national designation as one of America’s Byways® are submitted for consideration by FHWA.
Review and evaluate nomination submissions. As needed, seek assistance from the FHWA Division Office byway contact.
Verify that the nomination applications include the required supporting documentation and that the supporting documentation effectively illustrates the information requested. All supporting documentation must be submitted electronically with the online application and included in the signed hard copy required for consideration.
Return any incomplete or insufficiently substantiated nomination applications to applicants for refinement and resubmission if you think additional effort might result in a complete or better presented application.
Use the Online Nomination Review System at http://www.bywaysonline.org/nominations/application/ to record specific information about each nomination application submitted for consideration.
Coordinate with other States, Indian tribes and/or Federal land management agencies on multi-state, multi-tribe or multi-agency nomination applications.
Submit only complete applications to the FHWA Division Office. Deliver a printed, signed copy of the nomination application to the FHWA Division Office by the established deadline. Incomplete applications should not be submitted to the FHWA division office for review.
